Thought process has started
Although there are still 40 gigs left of the a-ha ending tour, the three band members have long since begun to think about life after the band. Among other aims Paul Savoy themselves as a songwriter for others. AVARVE Henriksen

First Coming Saturday is a-ha on stage at a packed Ullevaal Stadium, the first of nine concerts at home soil before the most important bands thank him for 25 years. This autumn the band through a total of 40 concerts around Europe before the end of Oslo Spektrum 4 December.
When they have already done 29 concerts since they started farewell tour Ending on a High Note in Buenos Aires in Argentina in March.
- I like to travel around the world to play concerts, and there are probably some of the things I will miss the most from the time of a-ha. We have got a great reception everywhere on this tour end, the audience has really shown us that we have meant something for them, "said Paul Savoy.
Yesterday, they met three band members Norwegian press, the same day as a relaunched version of the book The Swing Of Things 1985 - 2010 by Jan Omdahl was released.
Printer.
- It's probably not this promotion I will miss most, chuckles Paul Savoy. With him to Oslo, he has his wife Lauren, who participated in the project band Savoy. But something new Savoy album is not coming yet.
- I have always said that Paul should write songs for other artists, "says Lauren Waaktar-Savoy.
- And I do that as I am told, chuckles husband.
For the life of a-ha is already thinking stage for all three. And Waaktar-Savoy is a life as a songwriter.
- Since we announced that we would stop, I have been contacted by some people who asked if I was interested in various projects. That's what I think of now, there are so many great voices out there, that really speaks to me. It would be cool to write for some of these, I have already made me a list of names that I would like to write for. But do not get you, he smiles.
Mixture.
Nor Morten Harket and Magne Furuholmen will make with the music, even if they leave the a-ha. Both have previously made solo projects. Furuholmen also have a life as an artist, besides that he also takes part in the band Apparatjik, along with Coldplay bassist Guy Berrryman and Mew-vocalist Jonas Bjerre.
- There are many of those things where, yes, I have always worked in parallel with different things. At the same time, I think 2011 is a year of reflection, but there are several projects at once. In essentially it's about giving themselves the ability to think totally different and new, and have an ambition that fifty year old to be able to define the rest of your life, but that is not only the success inexorable logic, "says Furuholmen.
Say no.
Morten Harket feel it is absolutely true that a-ha now give them, and that they allow three new things be allowed to happen.
- There are many different things I look at, which is interesting. I write rather nothing at the moment, there is no room for. Yet I know that it starts to twitch a little bit left, so it would be strange if the desire to write new songs would not come. But I feel that it is most appropriate to just let things happen and let the horizon be open, "said Morten Harket.
- See for yourself as the frontman of another band sometime in the future?
- I have no comment.
- Your daughter Tomine Harket participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, what about yourself?
- It could be interesting if you had taken me to be wrong, but I think it's the one thing I think pretty sure I can say no to.

Por Paul y Morten (gracias a Sandra por tremenda traducción del alemán)
A-ha: A long pop career is coming to an end
Morten Harket: "We are not dying"
Who does not remember the three young Norwegians who revolutionized the music video industry in 1985 with 'Take on me' and the accompanying cartoon video? Meanwhile, 25 years ago have passed and A-ha are now on a worldwide farewell tour with the well-suited title "Ending On A High note'.
In addition, fans can look forward to a major retrospective in form of a CD : On August 6 '25', the last album of the Norwegians will be out in the record stores.
We met with songwriter Pal Waaktaar-Savoy and frontman Morten Harket, who by the way also understands German, on their farewell tour and asked them about their feelings regarding the farewell, their future plans and the "a-ha" experiences with fans!
Hello Pal and Morten, you're now in the middle of your farewell tour ... How does it feels for you at the moment?
Pal: So far it's great. We already have been to South America, U.S., and some stations in Europe. We have got a fantastic feedback everywhere.
Morten: Everyone always wants to know how sad it is ... But it's not, it's more of a winning feeling, we can look back to a long career and a lot of work, that's great, and a reason for celebration .. Of course it's emotional, but it's more like a feeling that you can be proud of something. We are not dying (laughs).
Is it a special feedback you're getting on a farewell tour?
Pal: It's a different mood in the arenas, we surely feel that. We focus on a good show, but the atmosphere is of course noticed by us. The fans are very welcome, tell us many touching things and wish that we remain a little longer.
Morten: We're currently in the middle of the tour, and yes, it's nice to get that much feedback from the audience.
What special a-ha highlights spontaneously come to your mind?
Morten: There are so many, I'm somehow living in a business of highlights, it is difficult to choose one. It's sort of like a clown, if he had to pick his funniest moment.
Pal: It's really difficult. We were successful in so many countries, have also made electronic things, I have many good memories about that. The first phase of our career, for example, particularly when we had our first record deal after all the tedious time. Then the fan hysteria, that was crazy! When people practically have lived at our doorstep ...
....Seriously? Tell us about it!
Pal: Yes, honestly! A couple of years it was that way, you open the door and wants to step outside .... (starts to laugh) All very nice people, you even get to know some a little. Some still send postcards and are now scattered all over the globe, of course grown up now and they have families of their own, which is very interesting and beautiful to see.
What will you miss the most?
Pal: First of all, playing live shows. This is something special and cannot be taken for granted. To have this communication with an audience, no matter how big it is, is special for every kind of artist. Also, producing a new song in the studio, to see how it sounds, this whole creative process is always very exciting. It is a bit odd to suddenly not having that anymore.
And what are you looking forward to the most?
Pal: To have an empty calendar! You do not have to be here, then there again, just to have this total freedom. No pressure, except that one you make yourself. I have a 10-year Son, whom I can see much more often. We live in New York and I love it to just enjoy the atmosphere there, the time and the freedom, and to lead a normal life.
What would you say if your children would want to work in the show business too? A name like "Harket" probably would open as a door to that?
Morten: If one of my children would want to get into showbiz, I would respect that - and would support it. But it is not easier but more difficult with a famous last name! The immediate attention is of course faster, but for the wrong reasons. If they want to be artists, then on their own, otherwise the name is working against them. It must be earned.
When you have decided to end A-ha, was it a certain moment?
Morten: It was more of a growing process, not a specific moment. You come to a point where it just feels completed and the right moment. To turn around, shake each others hands and be grateful for what you have had. We do that now in the form of a tour.
Pal: I think, after recording the last album it was a done deal. As with all things in a-ha, there is always at least one who does not want a certain thing. And this time it was me, I wanted to continue, at least for one more album.
Is it always like a democratic decision with you?
Pal: Sort of, unless one can still convince the other. There surely have been some discussion!
What's up next for you guys?
How will it be like after the last evening and the last song: Do you simply say goodbay and go home? Will you be celebrating together? How does one end such a thing ... ?
Morten (smiling): “Good night and thank you all” ... But what the three of us will do that evening ... we do not know exactly yet, we will see what happens. There was no rehearsal for that yet ...
Pal: We will certainly have a party! It's crazy ... It's like breaking up with your girlfriend. And we will break up in about 5 months time on December 4th. It is a strange feeling because you are "working towards" to it ...
With so many songs, how do you decide which songs will be used in the shows?
Pal: The more songs you have, the more difficult it will be, of course. Once we included the well-known songs, is only a limited amount of space left over. We then discuss. Sometimes I would like to play a bunch of songs that otherwise never make it into a show! That would be fun ... But we try to insert them here and there! There still will be some surprises ahead.
Morten, you are holding a record for the longest note sung within more than 20 seconds. Is it becoming more difficult over the time to manage the enormously high notes in the songs when playing live?
Morten: No, not really. I've sung it so many times, sometimes I can sning it live even longer than those 20 seconds! It depends on what I hear on stage, how the support is doing, and how the song is played. Sometimes we have a show where it just does not work, and I can not set the tone exactly. This record (for "Summer Moved On") somehow happened 'by accident', everyone was saying "Come on Morten, be a devil, keep the tone even longer" ...and you just do it ...
Do you find it harder for young bands to be successful today?
Pal: Let's put it that way: It is much easier to make music today. Back in our time, it was always a difficult thing to save money to then being able to go into a studio. And then, the begging so our songs would be played! Nowadays, it is by far easier to produce music with the computer. But the bad part is that there's no more money coming from it. Meaning, there are fewer sales. It all mainly depends on live performances. But it is the way things go, that things change to a certain degree and it is also exciting to watch that.
Morten: There are so many young talents out there. I do not know whether today's environment allows it to start a similar career like ours. I do not think that's still possible as the conditions have changed a lot since then. There are so many TV stations, radio stations, internet sites, the possibilities of communication have become very confusing and hard to overlook. When we appeared on Norwegian television back then, that already covered a major part of the media already. It simply was a different time, today it is much more complex and difficult. But still possible.
Pal, for you as a songwriter, how does if feel if you now hear one of your earlier songs somewhere?
Pal: The only moments we are listening to our songs are if they are played on the radio. This is always such a surprise, "oh wait ... yes, that's us"... I do keep hearing the songs in my ears how they sounded before we recorded them. Nothing is perfect. And when we hear them on the radio, they are like snapshots - and I remember exactly where we have recorded the song, which album, which day. For me it is like when you flick through a photo album.
And sometimes you even think "Oh, that part I would have wanted to change"?
Pal: ... all the time! Every time. That is why I don't listen to out albums (laughs)
What are your future plans?
Morten: My plans are still uncertain. At the moment I do not think about it and keep everything open.
Pal: I would prefer to go immediately into the recording studio working on new projects! Whether this is with a new band or with other artists - there are many with whom I would like to write something together. But like Morten, I leave things open and see what happens.
Joint projects ... are there any preferred candidates?
Pal: ... I have as a secret list. (laughs) That's all I'm saying now. A would also like to work with Morten, he has a fantastic voice. You can write what you want - he is able to sing it.
How is your relationship, will you also meet up in private in future?
Pal: Magne and I used to be neighbours, and we met Morten at the age of 16, 17. From there it all started, and later we were more like colleagues, had shared companies and all these things. It will be nice to see each other now without that background. Without having to make decisions, no schedule, no agenda ... That will be interesting because we never really had that. It is always a difficult mix when the whole business comes into the game.
Morten: That's life, everything stops at a certain point and then opens a new perspective, and we will continue to be creative. And possibly even work together again, who knows!
And finally: What interview question would you never like to hear again ...?
Pal: "What do you do on 5 December?”
Thank you for the interview!
