Furuholmen to build igloo at school in Flø
In the little village of Flø, Magne Furuholmen will do a "pathetic" attempt at preventing snow and ice from melting, as a commentary to the global warming.
In the 80s Magne Furuholmen toured the world with a-ha. In 2001 you could find him on a stamp. Just before Christmas you could see him on TV together with the Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore. In addition to being a musician, Furuholmen is an accomplished artist. He made the art installation for the Nobel ceremony. The next thing on his schedule is an art exhibition at Flø, to open February 10th.
Anticlimax
Magne Furuholmen comes to Flø with the exhibition "Anticlimax". The exhibition is a continuation of his work with the "Climax"-sculpture, which was unveiled by Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore at the Nobel Peace Center on December 11th 2007. The aluminum house of cards was comissioned by Hydro and was made out of an old fighter plane, oil tankers and traffic signs.
"I look at my work as studies. The issues that my art touches upon, increase my level of knowledge and thereby also my own level of involvement", Magne Furuholmen says.
The exhibition at Flø is going to include an installation that will measure the time it takes before different objects made out of snow and ice melt. By the use of aluminum the artist will do some "pathetic" attempts at trying to stop an igloo and some other sculptures from melting. The installation is gradually going to change character, until the audience eventually will have to wade through water inside the room. Afterwards it will be possible to buy aluminum signs with writings, in memory of each work of art.
Rubber boots and plastic covers
The gallerist Hugo Opdal assures us that he is going to cover the floor with a specially made plastic cover that can stand water, so the old school won't be damaged by the exhibition. In order for the audience to stay dry on their feet, he will buy several pairs of rubber boots for them to wear.
Fragile balance
Magne Furuholmen is also presenting several related works. There will be new graphic prints in black/white/aluminum, and a smaller version of the "Climax"-sculpture - laser-engraved playing cards which include interpretations of the Kyoto agreement.
The audience will be invited to take the fate of the world into their own hands, by building their own house of cards and see if it falls to pieces or if it remains standing in a fragile balance.
"Art has a better ability to ask good questions than giving answers. But good questions are important, the answers have to be constantly re-evaluated anyway", Furuholmen says.
Using web camera
Hugo Opdal can joyfully reveal that Hydro is going to sponsor the exhibition. That's not something they do very often, but they found this very intriguing. Bleed Design Studio is going to sponsor the graphic design of the art exhibition.
Wanting to give something back, Opdal will be documenting the exhibition. He is going to point a web camera at the melting objects, so that people can follow the ongoing developments on the internet.
Interesting audience
Magne Furuholmen hopes that this exhibition can inspire people to wonder, which was also part of the reason he wanted to come to Studio Hugo Opdal on the coast of Sunnmøre.
"I became curious about this gallery which is situated in such special surroundings. It's interesting to meet an audience in other places than metropolitans like London and Oslo", says Furuholmen, who will be present when the exhibition opens.
The exhibition will last from 10. February to 30. March.
The prices of the artworks are going to vary between 6000 and 15000 kroner.
